On the July Artwalk we launched an exciting new commissioned exhibition of artwork by Grace Clifford: Going Up in the World over 3 spaces - The Art House, Wakefield Pie Shop and The Black Rock. Using everyday objects as a starting point for her sculptures, Clifford reimagines these familiar items to help start conversations around who art is for.
Also at The Art House were exhibitions - Conversations with Nature: contemporary paintings by Helen Thomas, Alison Critchlow & Natalie Dowse and Sam Metz Making Solid - Unpredictable Bodies. In the terrace space, the Art House's Art & Health programme celebrated works from their project Re-Emerge.
Across the road at the Theatre Royal Wakefield, Speak Up a celebration of a project with Cathedral Academy showcased vibrant prints and films created by Wakefield students exploring equality, sexual harassment and mental health. Wakefield Cathedral became a gallery for 3D works when the Yorkshire Sculptors group exhibited their members work, alongside artworks by Philip Chapman and Lisa Fairchild who are part of South Yorkshirre Group ArtWorks in the Treacy Hall.
The Gissing Centre celebrated local writers across the years with their new exhibition, and Jolly Boys joined us for the last time with live music by Ali Bullivent. At the Ridings visitors could create their own prints at the Makey Wakey pop-up in Merrie Studios and explore a variety of Makey Wakey tenants spaces.
"It was so rewarding to get to talk about our work on 97% and to hear feedback. We also got to make connections with a number of artists whom we hadn’t met before. They are working on projects with ties to things we’re working on, so Artwalk provided us this opportunity to meet and see how we might collaborate." - Steven Busfield, Empath Action CIC
