The Art House
Scopophilia
An Exhibition by Sara Brannan
Scopophilia – translated as ‘the love of looking’ – refers to the predominately male gaze of Hollywood cinema. Used in feminist film criticism, the term is heavily influenced by both Freudian and Lacanian psychoanalysis. Both the subject matter and the techniques of filming are seen to encapsulate the desire for men to look at women.
Made specifically for The Art House solo development opportunity ‘Some Times’, the work uses footage from the 1962 film ‘The Brain that Wouldn’t Die’. Focusing on individual characters, the film has been taken and manipulated into a short film piece. Sara singles out and magnifies the themes of voyeuristic sadism, narcissim, fetish and desire.
Through creating space between the female and male characters, and by positioning the works throughout the building, the spectators own voyeurism is questioned.
